Emily Allen
1840-1920
Emily was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Sarah Allen (nee Jordan) who were on the 23rd October 1820, at St Mary, Speen, Berkshire.
Her father Wiliam was baptised on the 10th March 1799, in Speen Berkshire, the son of Thomas (a Millwright) and Mary Allen.
Her mother Sarah was born on the 29th December 1799, she was baptised on the 7th February 1800, in Devizes, Wiltshire, the daughter of Edward and Sarah Jordan (nee Goodman) who were married on the 29th November 1791 at St John, Devizes (Sarah was from Bishops Cannings)
Emily’s siblings were:
Eliza, baptised 18th January 1824, at St Nicolas, Newbury
George, baptised 16th July1826, at St Nicolas, Newbury
Mary Ann, baptised 22nd February 1829, at St Nicolas, Newbury
Charles, baptised on the 10th July 1831, at the Methodist Church, Northbrook Street Newbury,
Henry, born c1835
Sarah, born c1838
Alfred, 1842
The 1841 census records William (40), as a Millwright, living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury with Sarah (40) and their children, Eliza (15), George (14), Mary Ann (12), Charles (10), Henry (6), Sarah (3) and Emily (1).
Emily’s father William died aged 49 in 1848, he was buried on the 30th December at St Nicolas, Newbury
The 1851 census records Sarah (51), living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury, with her children, Charles (19), a Miller, Henry (16), a Painer, Sarah (14), Emily (11), Alfred (8) and a lodger, Frederic Walker (21) a Painer.
The 1861 census records Emily (20) as a Housemaid, at St Mark’s College, Chelsea, Middlesex.
In 1871 Emily (30) was working as a Housemaid, in Idlicote House, Idlicote, Warwickshire, for Gustavus L Basset (35) a Justice of the Peace. (Surname recorded as Stlen on ancestry)
In 1891 Emily (50) was working as a Ladies Maid for a Charlotte Wingfield (72) who was living on her own means. They were recorded residing in a Lodging House, on the Promenade, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire
Emily (60) was still working as a Ladies Maid for Charlotte Wingfield (82) in 1901. They were recorded living at 11 Promenade Terrace, Cheltenham.
By 1911 Emily (70) was living on her own means, lodging at Evelyn Villa, Chesterfield Road, Newbury, with a Frederick Sly (39) and his family.
Emily died aged 80 on the 16th December 1920. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21st December.
