Emma, her parents, siblings and early life:

Emma was baptised on the 12^thMay 1844 in Calverleigh, Devon, the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Daw (nee Hitchcock) who were married on the 9^thAugust 1832, in Bristol, Gloucestershire. (Surname recorded as Doe, at time of marriage)

Emma’s mother Elizabeth was baptised on the 19^thAugust 1810, in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon, the daughter of John and Melicent Hitchcock (nee Palmer) who were married in 1810, in Cheriton Fitzpaine.

Her father Samuel was born on the 17^thFebruary 1804. He was baptised on the 21^stMay 1804, at St Peter, Tiverton, Devon, the son of Samuel and Sarah Daw

Samuel and Elizabeth also had the following children:

Sarah Daw, baptised 4^thMarch 1833, at St Paul, Portland Square, Bristol (dad a Tanner, abode, Charlotte Street)

Elizabeth Dawe, baptised 14^thJune 1835, in Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon (dad a labourer)

Ann Dawe, baptised 12^thMarch 1837, in Cheriton Fitzpaine (dad a Labourer)

Samuel Dawe, baptised 22^ndSeptember 1839, in Cheriton Fitzpaine (dad a Labourer)

Jane Dawe baptised 13^thMarch 1842, in Cheriton Fitzpaine (dad a Labourer)

The 1841 census records Samuel Dawe (35), as a Farmer, living at Gates, Cheriton Fitzpaine, Devon, with Elizabeth (30) and their children, Elizabeth (6), Ann (4) and Samuel (1). Their daughter Sarah Daw (7) was recorded living with her grandparents, John Hitchcock (51), a Journeyman Tanner and Mildred Hitchcock (58), in East Wonford, Heavitree, Devon.

Emma’s father Samuel died aged 42, in 1845. He was buried at St Peter, Tiverton, Devon

In 1851 Elizabeth (40), a Pauper/Charwoman and her children, Elizabeth (15), Samuel (10), Jane (8), Emma (6) were recorded living in Potter’s Buildings, Heavitree, Devon. Emma’s sister, Sarah (17), was working as a Servant, she was still living with their grandparents John Hitchcock (62) and Mildred Hitchcock (68), who were now living in Tan Yard, Heavitree.

Emma in later life:

In 1861 Emma (16) was working as a House Servant, for a William Higgs (79), a retired Royal Navy Captain and his siter Charlotte (84), in London Road, Heavitree, Devon.

The 1871 census records Emma (27) as a House Maid, at 53, Lowndes Square, Chelsea, (now Belgravia) the home of George Palmer (68), a Clergyman, and his family.

In 1881 Emma (33) was recorded as a Domestic Servant, working for Hugh De Grey Seymour (37), the Earl of Yarmouth and Mary De Grey Seymour (34), the Countess of Yarmouth and their family, at 26 Beaufort Gardens, Kensington, Middlesex.

No census record found in 1891 for Emma.

(Thomas was born in 1847, in Steventon, Berkshire, the son of Stephen and Eliza Prior. His 1^st wife was Ann Knight, they were married on the 5^thOctober 1868, in Long Ditton, Surrey. They had the following children: William Stephen, born 1869, in Wantage, Charles, born c1875 and Edward, born 1876, both born in Dorking. Thomas was widowed in 1894, Ann died aged 48, in Dorking)

The 1901 census records Thomas (50), a Domestic Gardener and Emma (51), living at Red House Yard Cottage, Frimley, Surrey.

Thomas died aged 55 on the 29^thJuly 1903. Abode at time of death, “Elmsfield” Hare Hatch, Twyford, Berkshire.

The 1911 census record Emma (65) living at 4, Bourne Terrace, Wash Common, Berkshire, with her eldest sister, Sarah Daw (77) and their widowed niece, Emma Sanders (31).

Emma’s sister Sarah died aged 84 in 1918, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14^thJanuary

Emma died aged 76, on the 6^thApril 1921, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9^thApril.
