Sarah Allen
c1838-1917
Sarah was born in Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of William and Sarah Allen (nee Jordan) who were on the 23rd October 1820, at St Mary, Speen, Berkshire.
Her father Wiliam was baptised on the 10th March 1799, in Speen Berkshire, the son of Thomas (a Millwright) and Mary Allen.
Her mother Sarah was born on the 29th December 1799, she was baptised on the 7th February 1800, in Devizes, Wiltshire, the daughter of Edward and Sarah Jordan (nee Goodman) who were married on the 29th November 1791 at St John, Devizes (Sarah was from Bishops Cannings)
Sarah’s siblings were:
Eliza, baptised 18th January 1824, at St Nicolas, Newbury
George, baptised 16th July1826, at St Nicolas, Newbury
Mary Ann, baptised 22nd February 1829, at St Nicolas, Newbury
Charles, baptised on the 10th July 1831, at the Methodist Church, Northbrook Street Newbury,
Henry, born c1835
Emily, born 1840
Alfred, 1842
The 1841 census records William (40), as a Millwright, living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury with Sarah (40) and their children, Eliza (15), George (14), Mary Ann (12), Charles (10), Henry (6), Sarah (3) and Emily (1).
Sarah’s father William died aged 49 in 1848, he was buried on the 30th December at St Nicolas, Newbury
The 1851 census records Sarah (51), living in Northcroft Lane, Newbury, with her children, Charles (19), a Miller, Henry (16), a Painer, Sarah (14), Emily (11), Alfred (8) and a lodger, Frederic Walker (21) a Painer.
In 1861 Sarah (23) was working as a Housemaid at 13 Pelham Crescent, Kensington, Middlesex, for a Margaret Dalmaine aged 80, a Fundholder, who was blind.
The 1871 census records Sarah (33) working as a Housemaid at Priors Court House, Chieveley, Berkshire, for spinster, Mary Wasey (75), a Gentlewoman and Landowner. Also recorded in the household was a Butler, a Cook, a Kitchen Maid and a Page.
By 1881 Sarah (42) was working as a Domestic Housemaid for spinster, Sophia Piggott, an Annuitant, at Taylor’s Farm (Private House) in West Lavington, Sussex
The 1891 census records Sarah (53) living with her mother at 2 Kimber’s Almshouses, Newbury. She was recorded as a Housekeeper.
Sarah’s mother Sarah died aged 93 on the 14th May 1893. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th May.
In 1901 Sarah (63) was living on her own means, at 3 Frederick Cottages, Newbury.
The 1911 census records Sarah (73) living on her own means, at 72 Bartholomew Street, Newbury.
She died aged 79 at the Newbury Infirmary on the 28th March, 1917 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with her mother, on the 31st March.
