Constable Albert Alexander was injured during the bombing of Southampton in 1941. When he developed blood poisoning, he was moved to the Radcliffe Infirmary Oxford for treatment. It was agreed that he would be injected with the new drug penicillin. His condition improved, but after 5 days the supply ran out and a month later, he died. He was the first person in the world to be treated with penicillin. His wife Edith was buried in the same grave in 1985.
When their daughter Sheila LeBlanc, who had married an American serviceman, visited from California she was able to lay flowers not only on her parents’ grave but also on her grandparents’ (Thomas and Annie Deacon) grave nearby. This event was covered by the BBC and Newbury Weekly news.
