John Sidney Paine (1890 – 1969)
John Sidney Paine was born on 30 July 1890 in Charlton in Kent, the son of George Sidney and Mary Bourne, nee Tomes, Paine.
John was recorded with his parents and his aunt Teresa Ann Hudson (his mother’s sister) and uncle Charles James Hudson at 4 Wentworth Terrace in Wakefield in the 1891 census. His father George was a draper.
In the 1901 census John was recorded living with his parents, brothers Stanley, Wilfred and Eric, sister Dora and 3 servants at 186 Eglinton Road in Plumstead. His father George was still a draper.
Ten years later in the 1911 census the family had moved to Newbury and were living at Merlindale, 44 Howard Road. John was recorded with his parents George and Mary along with five brothers, Stanley Herbert aged 18, Wilfred George aged 16, Eric Charles aged 15, Leonard Ernest aged 8 and Maurice William aged 5 and sister Dora aged 12. There was also a general domestic servant living in the house. George was a hosier running his own business and the three eldest sons were assisting him while Eric was a chemist’s apprentice.
John was still living at 44 Howard Road in 1921 with his parents and three of his brothers along with his sister Dora. John was assisting his father George who was a gents general outfitter based at 21 Northbrook Street, his brother Maurice was also assisting in the business. Another brother Leonard was an apprentice ironmonger.
When the national register was compiled in September 1939 John was still living at 44 Howard Road in 1921 along with his widowed mother Mary, brothers Wilfred and Maurice and sister Dora. John and his brother Maurice were recorded as gents outfitters while his brother Wilfred was incapacitated.
John died on 22 October 1969 aged 79 while living at 44 Howard Road. and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 24 October. He left a will and probate was granted on 16 February 1970 at Oxford. The value of the estate was £45,046.
John’s parents George Sidney Paine and Mary Bourne Paine were buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 11 April 1928 and 12 October 1945 respectively. John’s sister Dora Helen Mary Paine was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 21 July 1960.
