Charles, his parents, siblings and early life:

Charles was born on the 7th January 1875, in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of Alfred and Martha Allen (nee Hopkins) who were married on the 1st January 1866 in Ham, Wiltshire.

His father Alfred was born in 1842 in Newbury, Berkshire, the son of William and Sarah Allen (nee Jordan) who were married on the 23rd October 1820, at St Mary, Speen, Berkshire. Alfred died aged 86 in 1929, on the 19th April 1929. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 22nd April.

His mother Martha was baptised in 1839 in Inkpen, Berkshire, the daughter of George and Sarah Hopkins (nee Jackson) who were married in 1836, in Inkpen. Martha died aged 59, on the 25th August 1898. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th August

Alfred and Martha also had the following children:

Agnes Sarah, 1868 (died aged 9, on the 14th July 1877, buried in the NRC on the 15th July)

Emily Jordan, 1872

Edwin Hopkins, 1878

William Hopkins, 1881

The 1881 census records Alfred (38) a Master Plumber, employing 2 men and 1 boy, living in West Street, Newbury, with Martha (41), Alfred (14), Elizabeth (10), Emily (8), Charles (6) and Edwin (2).

In 1891 Charles (16) was recorded as a Decorator’s Apprentice, living at home, in West Street, with his father Alfred (48), a Decorator, his mother (51) and his siblings, Elizabeth (20), a Dressmaker, Emily (18), a Dressmaker, Edwin (12) and William (9).

Bride: Mary Elizabeth Andrews, aged 37, spinster, abode, 31 Queen’s Gate

Fathers: Alfred Allen, a Decorator and James Andrews, a Farm Bailiff

Witnesses: Edwin Hopkins Allen and Sarah Annie Andrews

(Mary Elizabeth was born in 1877 in Emberton, Buckinghamshire, the daughter of James and Susanna Palmer Andrews (nee Rogers) who were married in 1867, in Buckinghamshire.)

The 1901 census records Charles (26) as a House Decorator living at 1 West Street, Newbury, with Mary (23).

Charles and Mary had the following two children:

Edwin Andrew, 1915

The 1911 census records Charles (36) as a House Painter, living at 1 West Street, Newbury, with Mary (33), Margaret (8) and two boarders.

In 1921 Charles (46), a House Decorator, Mary (44), Margaret (18), a Postmaster Telegraphist, Edwin (5) and a boarder, were recorded living at The Willows, Craven Road, Newbury.

The family were living at 41 Bartholomew Street, Newbury by 1929.

Charles was widowed in 1929. Mary Elizabeth died aged 52, on the 3rd November. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8th November.

Charles continued to live at 41 Bartholomew Street until 1938.

The 1939 Register records Charles as a House Decorator, living at 60 Craven Road, Newbury.

Charles died aged 92 on the 24th May 1967, at Lord Mayor Treloar Hospital, Alton, Hampshire. His body was brought to Newbury and he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 31st May, with his wife Mary Elizabeth.
