Henry Thomas Parr
1878-1922
Henry Thomas was born in 1878, in Wantage, Berkshire, the son of Henry Thomas and Elvina Sophia Parr (nee Holman) who were married in 1872, in Southampton, Hampshire.
Henry’s father Henry Thomas was born on the 22nd June 1848, in Newbury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 27th August 1848, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury as Thomas, the son of Thomas and Eliza Parr (nee Harrison) who were married on the 31st August 1842, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury.
His mother Elvina Sophia was born in 1852, in Ore, Sussex, the daughter of Isaac and Harriet Holman (nee Collins) who were married in 1847, in Hastings, Sussex.
Henry and Elvina also had the following children:
Elvina Alethea c1874 in Southampton
Henrietta Florence 1875 in Southampton
Eliza Lilian, 1876 in Highworth
Clara Maud Holman, in 1879 in Wantage
The 1881 census records Henry (32) as a Tailor and Hatter, living at 7 Vicar Street, Kidderminster, Worcestershire, with Elvina (28) and their children, Elvina (7), Henrietta (6), Eliza (4), Henry Thomas (2) and Clara (1).
In 1891 Henry (42) was recorded as an Outfitter, living at 146 Chatham Street, Reading, Berkshire, with Elvina (38), a Dressmaker, Elvina (14), Henry Thomas (12) and Clara (11).
The 1901 census records Henry Thomas (22) as a Draper’s Assistant. His father Henry (53) was recoded living on his own means. Both were recorded at the home of his married sister Florence Harbor (25) and her husband Frederick (33), at 175 Caversham Road, Reading. His mother Elvina (48) was recorded visiting her widowed sister-in-law Clara Allen (58) in Greenham, Berkshire. (Recorded as Elwin S. Paro on ancestry)
By 1911 Henry’s parents, Henry (62) and Elvina (58) were living at “Maleta” Howard Road, Newbury, Berkshire. Henry Thomas (32) was working as a Draper’s Assistant, he was recorded living at 9 Moulsham Street, Chelmsford, Essex.
Henry’s father Henry died on either the 12th or the 16th January 1917, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th January. (Probate records his death as the 12th. MI and Newspaper obituary record his date of death as the 16th)
The 1921 census records Henry Thomas (43), as a General Labourer, living at 22 Howard Road, Newbury, with his mother Elvina (68) and three boarders.
Henry Thomas died aged 44, on the 15th July 1922, at Dunedin, Bath Road, Reading, Berkshire. His body was brought to Newbury and he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th July, with his father Henry Thomas (buried in 1917)
Probate: PARR Henry Thomas of Maleta Howard-road Newbury Berkshire draper’s assistant died 15th July 1922 at Dunedin Bath-road Reading Probate Oxford 25th August to Elvina Sophia Parr widow. Effects: £989 2s 2d
His mother Elvina died on the 2nd January 1934, in Reading, Berkshire. At the time of her death she was living at 194 Caversham Road, Reading.
