Bertha Louise Andrew
1875-1942
Bertha Louise was born on the 29th August 1875, in Hyde Park, London. She was baptised on the 20th October 1875 at Holy Trinity, Paddington the daughter of Alexander (a Gentleman) and Amy Derwent Andrew (nee Southey) who were married on the 14th September 1869 at All Saints, Kensington, Middlesex.
Her father Alexander was baptised on the 20th February 1839, at Christ Church, St Marylebone, London, the son of Alexander (a Merchant) and Louisa Andrew (nee Mockridge) who were married on the 3rd March 1832, at St George Bloomsbury. (Louisa was from the parish of Christ Church, St Marylebone).
Bertha’s mother Amy was born c1850 in Demerara Guyana, the daughter of Herbert Castle and Ellen Southey (nee Wilson) who were married on the 2nd August 1837, at St George, Demerara, Guyana.
Bertha’s siblings were:
Amy Rose, baptised 18th January 1871, at Holy Trinity (dad an Agent)
Malcolm Patrick, baptised 12th June 1872, at Holy Trinity (dad a Merchant)
Maud Mary (aka Mary), baptised 23rd January 1874, at Holy Trinity (dad a Merchant)
Reginald Alexander, baptised 27th December 1876, at St Andrew, Hove, Sussex (dad an Esquire)
Norman Ernest born 1878, in Brighton, Sussex
Bertha’s father Alexander died aged 40, on the 16th October 1880 in Croydon, leaving £8177 11s
In 1881 Amy (30), an Officer’s Widow and her children, Malcolm (9), Mary (7), Bertha (5), Reginald (4) and Norman (2) were living at 7, Highview Road, Norwood, Surrey.
The 1891 census records Amy (40), her children, Amy (20), Malcolm (19), Mary (17), Bertha (15), Reginald (14), Norman (12) and Amy’s sister, Bertha Southey (31), living in Streatham, London.
In 1901 Amy (50) was recorded living on her own means at 6 Montem Road, Forest Hill, Lewisham, with her daughters Amy (30), Mary M. (27) and Bertha (26) Mary and Bertha were recorded as Photographic Colourists.
The 1911 census records Bertha (35) as a Photographic Colourist, living at 6 Montem Road, Lewisham, with her mother Amy (60), living on her own means and her sister Amy (40).
The 1939 Electoral Register records Bertha living at 24 Enborne Road, Newbury. Also recorded at the same address were Edmund Lea Staples and Constance Ruth Staples. The 1939 Register records Bertha living on her own means at 25, Buckingham Road, Newbury. Also recorded in the same household were a Rose Hardy and May Marriott.
Bertha died aged 67 on the 12th November 1942 at the Emergency Hospital Newbury. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 14th November.
Probate: ANDREW Bertha Louise of 44 Enborne-road Newbury Berkshire spinster died 12th November 1942 at the County Emergency Hospital Newbury Probate Oxford 4th December to Archibald John Hills solicitor’s clerk. Effects: £116 15s 11d
