Unnamed Payne

Stillborn Payne (1929)

A stillborn child was buried on 24 October 1929 at Newtown Road Cemetery. According to the entry in the burial records it was a stillborn child of Alice Payne of 2 Bartholomew Place in Newbury.

In the 1921 census Stephen and Eliza Payne along with their son Frederick were recorded at 2 Bartolomew Place in Newbury. Stephen was a general labourer as was Frederick although it also mentions he had just been a soldier and had just been discharged.

Four years later in the 1925 electoral registers Stephen and Eliza were recorded at 5 Bartholomew Place while Frederick was listed at 2 Bartholomew Place.

Moving forward another four years in the 1929 electoral registers Stephen and Eliza were still at 5 Bartholomew Place while at 2 Bartholomew Place were Frederick and Elizabeth Fanny Payne. Frederick had married Elizabeth Fanny Painter in 1923 in Newbury. Elizabeth had not been recorded in earlier registers as the voting age for women was only reduced to 21 in 1928.

The parents of the stillborn child were probably Frederick and Elizabeth, although as still born births were not registered in 1929 it is not certain. No trace of any Alice Payne connected to these families has been found.

Frederick and Elizabeth were still listed in the 1934 electoral register at 2 Bartholomew Place.
