Ann Newth

Ann, her parents and siblings:

 Ann was baptised on the 14^th July 1805, at St Mary, Kintbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Benjamin and Mary Fidler (nee Langley) who were married on the 16^th August 1796, in Burmham Buckinghamshire. (Surname recorded as Fiddler at time of marriage). Mary gave birth to a daughter Susanna on the day she was married, Susanna was baptised on the 11^th September 1796, in Dorney, Buckinghamshire.

Ann’s father Benjamin was born c1771 in Ashampstead, Berkshire. (possible baptism, 1771 in Ashampstead, son of William and Mary Fidler). Benjamin was an Agricultural Labourer. He died aged 81 in 1852 and was buried on the 9^th March, at St Mary, Kintbury.

Her mother Mary was born c1777 in Bray, Berkshire, (possible baptism, 1777 in Bray, the daughter of Edward and Mary Langley). Mary died aged 90, in 1868, she was buried on the 28^th December, at St Mary, Kintbury.

Benjamin and Mary also had the following children baptised at St Mary, Kintbury:

Charles, 30^th June 1799

William, 9^th January 1803

Nanny, 18^th January 1807

Benjamin, 24^th December 1809

Elizabeth, 28^th July 1811

Abraham, 17^th July 1814

Mary, 7^th July 1816

James, 12^th December 1819 (died aged 2 weeks, buried 13^th December 1819, at St Mary, Kintbury)

Ann in later life:

Ann married Robert Newth, on the 7^th November 1825, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, both were single. Robert was recorded as a sojourner in the parish, witnesses were Samuel Purdue and Thomas Edmonds.

(Robert was baptised on the 23^rd February 1800, in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, the son of John and Elizabeth Newth, (nee Jackson) who were married on the 10^th January 1791, in Wootton Bassett).

The 1841 census records Robert (40) as a Publican, living in Northbrook Street, Newbury, with Ann (30), his mother Elizabeth (65), Ann’s brother-in-law, Benjamin Parfitt (25), Ann’s sister Elizabeth Parfitt (25), Ann’s niece Thurza Farley (15), a Joseph Waite (20), a Jacob Crook (30), an Edward Griffin (50), his wife Harriet Griffin (50) and their children, Thomas Griffin (15), William Griffin (15) Edward Griffin (12) and Charles Griffin (9).

In 1851 Robert (51) was recorded as a Coal Merchant, living at “The Rising Sun”, Wharf Road, Newbury, with Ann (44), his mother Elizabeth (84), Ann’s nieces, Thurza Farley (23), and Ann Pariftt (8) and his niece Sarah Gye (20).

By 1861 Robert (61), Ann (53) and a general servant, were living in Back Lane, Greenham, Berkshire. Robert was again recorded as a Coal Merchant in the census for this year.

The 1871 census records Robert aged 70, as a Barge Owner, living in Greenham Street, Greenham, with Ann (62) and a domestic servant.

Ann was widowed in 1873. Robert died aged 72, on the 15^th February, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21^st February.

Ann after Robert’s death:

The 1881 census records Ann (75) living at 4 New Church Almshouses, Newbury. Also living with her was a widow, Elizabeth Fidler (77).

Ann (85) was still living at 4 New Church Almshouses in 1891. The census for this year records a nurse, Charlotte Eustace (55), living with her.

Ann died aged 87, on the 24^th January 1893, she was laid to rest with her husband Robert, on the 27^th January.
