There is no burial register information available for Mary Ann Higgs.
Only three of the five burial register books still exist as far as we know and these are held at the Berkshire Record Office.
Stillborn children were not recorded in the burial register, only in the cemetery accounts.
East slope of roof: IMO/ Joshua HIGGS/ died Aug. 10th. 1866/ in the 74th. year of his age. "To die is gain." West slope of roof: STMO/ Mary Ann, the beloved wife of Joshua HIGGS (of Cold Ash, Thatcham and late of Davies Street, Berkeley Square)/ died Dec. 25th. 1860 aged 63 years. "--------Lord Jesus Christ." / Lower North side: Ezra PRISMALL died May 2nd. 1864 aged 10 mths. and 4 days./ John PRISMALL, died March 28th. 1865 aged ?7 months and 3 weeks, grandchildren of the above. Mary Ann Higgs
c1797-1860
Mary Ann Corderoy was born in Surrey she was baptised on the 4th June 1797 at St Mary Lambeth Surrey the daughter of George and Mary Corderoy (nee Mountford) who were married on the 20th March 1791 at St Mary Lambeth Surrey. Mary was a widow when she married George. Her 1st husband was John Downing they married on the 2nd February 1789 at St Mary Lambeth. John died in 1790 he was buried on the 3rd February at St Mary Lambeth.
Mary Ann married Joshua Higgs on the 23rd December 1815 at St Mary Newington Surrey (Joshua’s abode recorded as Lambeth on the marriage record), they had the following children:
Mary Ann baptised on the 1st June 1817 at St Mary the Less Lambeth Surrey (died aged 1 in 1818 buried 16th Mar)
Ann born c1817 (died aged 1 in 1818 buried 17th Dec)
Joshua baptised on the 13th August 1820 at St Mary the Less Lambeth Surrey
Mary Corderoy baptised on the 7th November 1824 at St Mary the Less Lambeth Surrey (died aged 16 in 1841 buried 15th June)
Maria baptised 24th February 1828 at St George Hanover Square Westminster
Ellen baptised 5th January 1830 at St George Hanover Square Westminster
George Corderoy born 1831 (died May 1832 aged 1year 3months)
Matilda born c1834
Esther born c1836
Joseph born 1838 (died aged 26, buried in the NRC on the 12th October 1864)
Sarah born 1839
Joshua was a Carpenter in his earlier working life, living in Duke Street Lambeth (as recorded on his older children’s baptism records). Various street and trade directories record him as a Carpenter and a Builder and Undertaker, at Grosvenor Market, Grosvenor Square, Davies Street, 63 Davies Street and 59A Davies Street Berkeley Square London.
The 1841 census records Mary (40), Joshua (45)and their children, Joshua (20), a Builder, Mary (15), Maria (13) and Matilda (8),living in Davies Street St George Hanover Square London also recorded in the household was a William Higgs (15), a Carpenter’s Apprentice. Joshua and Mary’s younger children, Esther (5), Joseph (3) and Sarah (1) were recorded living in Cold Ash Thatcham Berkshire.
The 1851 census records Mary (54), Joshua (58) and their daughters Maria (23) and Matilda (27) and two servants living at 59A Davies Street.
Mary Ann died aged 63 at The Retreat, Cold Ash, Thatcham on the 25th December 1860 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2nd January 1861
Joshua remarried on the 17th August 1863. His 2nd wife was Caroline Amelia Hopson.
Joshua died aged 73 on the 10th August 1866 at Mount Pleasant, Cold Ash he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th August alongside Mary Ann and their son Joseph.
