Recorder's Notes Annie Amelia was the eldest child of Richard & Ann, born in Twyford where her father had been working as a Signalman on the Railway for 2 years, earning 18/- week. She has no recorded occupation but may have helped her mother keep the busy coal yard, and later the shop, running for the men of the family.Mary Elizabeth Walker was the second daughter of Richard and Amelia. Aged 5, she was living with her Aunt Tarry, a Laundress, in The Marsh, Pangbourne & she never appears with her own family in future census records. She first marries Benjamin Smith. He was a carman to a Coal merchant (possibly her FiL) and they lived in Pangbourne with their 2 boys. Benjamin was KIA in 1917. Their youngest son, Reginald, had already died aged 6 in Pangbourne and his brother, Percy Benjamin, died after his mother's death, in a Japanese PoW Camp in Thailand in 1943. Percy's address was given as 17, Berkeley Rd, Newbury which had been the home of his Uncle Montague. In 1920, Mary married William Edward Charles, an older widow with children, of Dorset Rd, Kennington, but he died 4 years later. In 1925 she married Francis Joseph (Frank) Cullinan. Frank worked for the Postal Services as a Postman then cleaner in Newbury. Mary died in the Royal Berks Hospital & her husband died 8 years later aged 49 in the Sanatorium, Abingdon, Berks. Frank, whose burial is recorded in the NRC Burial Records is not listed in the index of graves. He may have been interred in his wife's grave without his name being engraved. Annie was born on 21 August 1847 at Fletton near Peterborough, Northants

(Q3 1847 Peterborough 15 323) & was baptised at Peterborough St John on 12 September 1847. Her parents were John, a Station Porter, & Elizabeth Mayes.

 

In 1851 they were living at Railway Cottage, Fletton. John, 28, was still a Porter & Elizabeth, 27 with two daughters: Annie, 3; & Lucy,1 (Ref: 961).

 

They were at the same address in 1861 but John, 36, is now a Potato Dealer. Elizabeth, 37; Annie, 13; Lucy, 11; Sarah, 8 & Elizabeth, 4.

 

By 1871 the family had moved to Northern Lane, Holbeach, Lincs. John, 50, is a Potato Merchant; Elizabeth, 47; Annie, 23; Elizabeth, 14 & John, 12.

 

Annie married Henry Walker on 27 May 1872 at Holbeach (Q2 1872 Holbeach 7a 701).

 

In 1881 Annie & Henry were living in Warwick. Henry,36, was a Superintendant Agent with an Insurance Company & Annie was 33. They had 4 children: Walter W, 7; John H, 5; Tom H, 3 (Ref: 7630) & Harold M, 10 weeks (Ref: 1115).

Annie’s sister, Sarah,28, is living with them. She has been entered with the surname Walker though she is still Mayes as didn’t marry until 1890.

 

By 1891 the family had moved to 16, Craven Street, Newbury. Henry, 46, was still an Insurance Superintendant & Annie, 43. 4 children were still at home; John H, 15; Tom H, 13; Harold M, 10 & Frank, 8.

 

Annie died on 23 May 1899 in the Radcliffe Infirmary, Oxford from Supperative Nephritis. (Q2 1899 Headington, Ox 3a 488). She had been living with Henry at 2, Edinburgh Terrace, West Mills, Newbury according to a Newbury Weekly News report. She was buried at NRC on 27 May 1899.

 

The detailed grave inscription mentions the memory of 3 children she lost in infancy: Edgar Percy (Ref: 5155); Hannah Elizabeth (Ref: 5138) & Ernest (Ref: 5139). They are buried in Leamington where the family had been living.

Her son Tom Harry is also remembered as he had died during the Boer War in 1900.

Her sister, Lucy, was buried in NRC in 1933 & was also added to the inscription.

 

Henry survived Annie but his death has not been confirmed.
