DEATH OF MRS. E. ROBINSON FUNERAL AT BARTHOLOMEW STREET METHODIST CHURCH

The funeral of Mrs. Eliza Robinson, widow of the late Mr. R.G. Robinson, of Enborne-road, Newbury, whose death occurred at Goring on Sunday, took place at the Old Cemetery, Newtown-road, yesterday (Wednesday). The deceased, who was in her 81St year, had lived with her daughter at Goring for 14 years, and during the past four years had been a great sufferer from creeping paralysis.

The service was at the Bartholomew-street Methodist Church, and was taken by the Rev. A. Russell Potts. Mrs. Charles Griffin was at the organ, and the hymns included "Abide with me."

The mourners were: Mr. M.G. Robinson (son), Mrs. E. Johnson, Mrs. E. Tull (daughters), Mr. F. Johnson, Mr. H. Tull (sons-in-law). Mr. Leslie Robinson, r. Gordon Robinson, Mr. Arthur Robinson (grandsons), Mrs. T. Judd (niece), Mr. W. Judd, Mr. George Dance (nephews), Mrs. Elise Dance and Mr. Andrew Morton.

Eliza, her parents, siblings and early life:

Eliza was born c1857, in Kingsclere, Hampshire, the daughter of William and Charlotte Holdup (nee Batt) who were married in Kingsclere in 1851.

Her father William was a Farmer. He was baptised on the 16th November 1823 at St Frideswide, Frilsham, Berkshire, the son of Henry (a Carrier) and Hannah Holdup (nee Giles) who were married on the 4th May 1822, at St Frideswide, Frilsham, Berkshire. William died aged 79, in 1907, in Kingsclere.

Her mother Charlotte was baptised on the 30th January 1825, in Eton, Buckinghamshire, the daughter of Francis (a Tailor) and Mary Ann Batt (nee Philby) who were married on the 11th November 1821, at St Michael, Bray, Berkshire. Charlotte died aged 76, in 1901, in Kingsclere.

William and Charlotte also had the following children (born in Kingsclere):

Sarah Ann, 1867 (died aged 1, in 1868)

In 1861 William (37), Charlotte (36) and their children Mary Ann (9), Ellen (6), Eliza (4) and Emily (1), were recorded living in Summerhurst, Kingsclere, Hampshire. William was farming 30 acres, employing 1 man.

Eliza (14) was still living in Summerhurst in 1871, with her father William (47), now farming 33 acres, her mother Charlotte (46), her sister Emily (11) and her brother George (8).

Eliza in later life:

The 1881 census records Eliza (24) working as a Housemaid/Domestic Servant, in Market Place, Newbury, for a William Burgess (53), a Draper and Clothier.

Eliza married Robert George Robinson in 1882 (marriage registered in Newbury)

(Robert George was born in Potbridge, Hampshire, in 1856, the son of Cornelius and Hannah Robinson (nee Fox) who were married on the 25th December 1852, in Chisledon, Wiltshire).

Robert George and Eliza had the following children, all born in Newbury:

A male child 1887, (died 1887, without being named, buried in the NRC on the 7th January).

Elsie Beatrice, 27th June 1890

Lilian Maud,1898

In 1891 Robert (34), a Baker, Eliza (34), Montague George, (9), Edith Annie (6) and Elsie Beatrice (9 months) were recorded living at Sarum House Shop, Enborne Road, Newbury.

The 1901 census records Robert (44) as a Baker and Shopkeeper. He was still living in Sarum House, with Eliza (44) and their children, Montague George (18) a Carpenter’s Apprentice, Edith Annie (16) a Dressmaker’s Apprentice, Elsie Beatrice (10) and Lilian Maud (2).

The 1907 Kelly’s Directory Robert George as a Baker & Grocer, at Sarum House, Enborne Road.

Robert George died aged 52, on the 4th February 1909, in Charing Cross Hospital, London, after an operation. His body was brought to Newbury and he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th February.

The 1911 census records Eliza (54) as a Grocer/Baker/Bread Maker/Shopkeeper, at Sarum House. Her daughters Elsie (20) and Lily (12) were living with her. Elsie was assisting in the business.

Eliza was again recorded as a Baker/Shopkeeper in 1921, she was recorded living at 20 Enborne Road, Newbury with her daughter Elsie (30), who was recorded as a Shop Assistant, employed by her mother.

Eliza died aged 80, on the 15th January 1838. At the time of her death, she was living with her married daughter Elsie Beatrice Tull and her family, in Redcross Road, Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th January, with her husband Robert George.
