Nathaniel Winter

c1807-1898

Nathaniel James Winter was born c1807 in Newbury, the son of Nathaniel Benjamin and Mary Winter (nee Lindsay) who were married on the 28^th October 1799 at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire.

His father Nathaniel Benjamin was baptised in 1776 in Newbury the son of Nathaniel James and Fanny Winter (nee Brown) who were married on the 24^th May 1773 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. He died aged 61 in 1837 and was buried on the 11^th December 1837 at St Nicolas Newbury.

His mother Mary was born c1780 she died aged 38 in 1818 and was buried on the 1^st January 1819 at St Nicolas Newbury.

Nathaniel Benjamin and Mary had the following children baptised at St Nicolas Church Newbury:

Elizabeth (born 20^th August) baptised 17^th September 1800

Ann (born 23^rd August) baptised 23^rd September 1801

John Janes (born 11^th July) baptised 7^th August 1805

John (born 2^nd February) baptised 8^th March 1807 (Possibly Nathaniel recorded as John by mistake)

The 1815 census of Newbury records Nathaniel (8) living in Townsend’s Yard on the west side of Bartholomew Street, Newbury with his father Nathaniel Benjamin (36), a Hair Dresser, his mother Mary (35), his sisters Elizabeth (15), Ann (14) and his brother John (10).

Nathaniel James married Elizabeth Wiggins at St Mary’s Church Greenham on the 20^th May 1834, both were single. They had a daughter Mary born later that year. Mary died soon after she was born, she was buried on the 26^th October 1834 at St Mary Greenham.  Elizabeth died the following year aged 31, she was buried on the 21^st December 1835 at St Mary Greenham.

Nathaniel remarried on the 30^th October 1836 at St Nicolas Church Newbury. His 2^nd wife was Martha Challis (nee Walter, a widow with three children).

The 1841 census records Nathaniel (30), Martha (40) and her children Cornelius Challis (15), Lavinia Challis (14) and Maria Challis (10), living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

In 1851 Nathaniel (44) was recorded as a Labourer and Boatman, living in Porter’s Yard, (off Bartholomew Street) Newbury with Martha (50).

Martha died aged 57 in 1857, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15^th September.

The 1861 census records Nathaniel (51) as a Bricklayer’s Labourer, lodging Bradley’s Yard, (off Cheap Street), Newbury with a widow, Rachel Briant (33) and her children John (10), Charles (8), Rachel (6) and George (1). (Rachel (nee Eggleton) was widowed in 1856, Her 1^st husband was John Bryant, they were married 1848).

Nathaniel married Rachel (Bryant) later that year.

Nathaniel and Rachel had the following children: William born 1862, Henry born c1865 and Amelia born 1867.

The 1871 census records the family living in Steamer’s Yard, Newbury, Nathaniel was still working as a Bricklayer’s Labourer.

By 1881 Nathaniel was working as a Builder’s Timekeeper and the family were living in Ashdown Court, Newbury.

The 1891 census records Nathaniel (84), Rachel (58) and Amelia (22) living in St John’s Almshouses, Argyle Road, Newbury.

Nathaniel died aged 91 on the 29^th October 1898, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 2^nd November.

The 1901 census records Rachel (70) as a Pauper/Charwoman, in the Workhouse Newbury.  She died in the Workhouse in 1907 aged 72 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23^rd May.
