Caleb Henry Moth
1863-1937
Caleb, his parents, siblings and early life:
Caleb was born in Burghclere, Hampshire. He was baptised on the 26th April 1863, in Burghclere, the son of John and Harriet Moth (nee Belcher) who were married in 1854 (marriage registered in Newbury)
His father John was born in Hoe Benham, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 3rd February 1828, at St Mary the Virgin, Speen, Berkshire, the son of Edward and Elizabeth Moth (nee Clark) who were married on the 4th April 1825, at St Andrew Boxford Berkshire. (Bride and Groom both of Bradfield. Witnesses: Henry Turner and Benjamin Shilton) John died aged 81 in 1908, in Newbury, Berkshire
His mother Harriet was baptised on the 20th April 1834 in Burghclere, Hampshire, the daughter of William (a Labourer) and Mary Belcher (nee Brackston) who were married on the 18th October 1833 in Burghclere. Harriet died aged 59 in 1893, in Newbury, Berkshire.
John and Harriet also had the following children baptised in Burghclere:
Edward William, born 1855, baptised 28th December 1862
Charles John, born 1856, baptised 28th December 1862
Frederick George, born c1859, baptised 27th February 1859
Sarah Ann, born 1861, baptised 24th February 1861
Arthur, born c1865, baptised 26th March 1865
Alice Mary, born 1867, baptised 26th May 1867
Florence, born 29th July 1871, baptised 27th August 1871
Frank, born 1876, baptised 7th April 1876
The 1861 census records Harriet (27) living in Sheep Wash, Burghclere, Hampshire with her children, Edward (5), Charles (4), Frederick (2) and Sarah Ann (2 months).
In 1871 John (43) was working as an Agricultural Labourer. He was living in Burghclere, Hampshire, with Harriet (37), Sarah Ann (10), Caleb (8), Arthur (6) and Alice Mary (3).
Caleb in later life:
In 1881 Caleb (18) was working as a Groom, at Burghclere Farm, Burghclere.
Caleb married in 1885
Marriage details:
Place: All Saints, Burghclere, Hampshire
Date: 1st October 1885
Groom: Caleb Henry Moth, aged 22, bachelor, occupation, Groom, abode, Ellesborough, Bucks
Bride: Susannah Smith, aged 25, spinster, abode, Burghclere, Hampshire
Fathers: John Moth and Henry Smith, both Labourers
Witnesses: Richard Nightingale and Eleanor Louise Nightingale
(Susannah was born c1859 Adbury Hampshire, the daughter of Henry and Jane Smith (nee Pearce) who were married on the 21st August 1856 in Ecchinswell, Hampshire).
Caleb and Susannah had the following children:
Henry John, born 1886 in Ellesborough, Buckinghamshire
Frank, born 7th November 1889, in Chilton Foliat, Wiltshire
By 1891 Caleb was working as a Domestic Gardener. The census for this year records Caleb (28) living at Littlecote Lodge, Chilton Foliat, with Susannah (31), his children Henry (4) and Frank (1) and his mother-in-law Jane Smith (60).
Their son Henry John died aged 8, on the 26th December 1894, at Alma Cottage, Bartholomew Street, Newbury. He was laid to rest in a private grave in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th December
By 1901 Caleb (38) and Susannah (42) were living at 2 Hereford Place, Newbury, Berkshire.
The 1911 census records Caleb and Susannah living in Chieveley, Berkshire.
The 1921 census records Caleb and Susannah living Stoney Heath, Ramsdell, Baughurst, Hampshire, with an Annie E.M. Wimberly. Caleb was working as a Gardener for Annie.
Susannah died aged 71 on the 11th March 1930, at 5 Bartholomew Almshouses, Newbury. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 13th March.
Caleb died aged 74 on the 12th September 1937, at “Penrose”, Chandos Road, Newbury (the home of his son Frank). He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th September.
