LEADER - June 6th, at 17, Kingshill-road, Swindon, the home of her daughter, Emily, widow of the late Joseph Leader, late of Ecchinswell and Curridge.
Funeral Newtown Cemetery, Newbury, Thursday June 10th at 2.30. Tea will be provided for any friends attending the funeral at Whitehorn’s Café, Bartholomew-street, Newbury.

Emily Leader 1865-1937 Emily, her parents, sisters and early like: Emily was born in Speen, Berkshire, the daughter of Albert and Mary Farr (nee Allen) who were married on the 20th October 1864, in Ramsbury, Wiltshire. Her father Albert was baptised on the 19th February 1837 in Aldbourne, Wiltshire, the son of Henry (a Labourer) and Patience Farr (nee Rushan/Rusham/Rushon/Rushen) who were married on the 6th April 1836, in Inkpen, Berkshire.
Her mother Mary was baptised on the 20th July 1834, at St Mary Bourne, Hampshire, the daughter of Thomas and Lucy Allen (nee Gamester) who were married on the 30th October 1824, at St Mary Bourne. Emily had two sisters, Alice, born 1867, in Eddington (near Hungerford) Berkshire and Mary, born 1872 in Beddington, Surrey.
In 1871 Emily’s father Albert (34) was working as a Coachman, he was living at 1, Waddon Court Cottages, Waddon, Croydon, Surrey, with Mary (36), Emily (5) and Alice (3).
In 1881 Emily (15) was working as a General Servant, she was living in Backway, Speen, Berkshire, with her father Albert (44), a Gardener, her mother Mary (46), her sister Mary (8) and an orphan, Annie Ralph (12). Her sister Alice (13) was working as a Kitchen Servant, in Oxford Road, Speenhamland, Berkshire, for a widow, Charlotte Mills (46). In 1891 Emily (25) was working as a Parlourmaid, for a widow, Mary Meyrick (64), in Back Lane, Chilton Foliat, Ramsbury Wiltshire.
Emily in later life: Emily married widower, Joseph Leader in 1894 (marriage registered in the December quarter in Newbury) (Joseph was born in 1856, in Baydon, Wiltshire, the son of Joseph and Mary Leader (nee Rushen/Rushan/Rushon) who were married on the 11th June 1851, in Ramsbury, Wiltshire. Joseph was a widower, he married Frances Hayward in 1878, in Wiltshire, they had the following children:

and Alice Beatrice, 1888.
Joseph was widowed in 1892) Joseph and Emily had the following two daughters, born in Baydon: Phoebe Lilian, 1896 and Bertha Emily 1898.
In 1901 Emily (35) was living with Joseph (44), a Farmer, in Stockcross, Berkshire, with Ernest (20), Alice (12), Phoebe (4) and Bertha (2). Emily’s mother Mary died aged 70, on the 25th August 1904, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th August. Emily’s daughter Phoebe Lilian died aged 12 on the 14th September 1908, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th September.
The 1911 census records Emily (45) living in Curridge Common, Newbury, with Joseph (54), a Poultry Keeper and their daughter Bertha Emily (12). Emily’s father Albert died aged 77, on the 24th February 1914, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with Mary, on the 27th February. The 1921 census records all three living at Lanolee Farm, Curridge, Berkshire. (It is rumoured (no substantial evidence) that Oliver Cromwell stayed at what is now Lanolee Farm during the Second Battle of Newbury in 1644).
Joseph died aged 72, on the 20th December 1928, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery with his daughter Phoebe Lilian, on the 24th December. At the time of his death Joseph was living at the Cottage Cow House Farm, North Sydmonton, Hampshire.
By 1930 Emily was living at 21 St John’s Road, Newbury, her sister Alice was living with her. Emily’s sister Alice, died in 1935, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th April. The 1937 Electoral Register records Emily living alone at 21 St John’s Road, Newbury.
Emily died aged 71 on the 6th June 1937. At the time of her death Emily was living with her married daughter Bertha Emily Hinder, and her family, in Kingsmill Road, Swindon. Her body was brought to Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 10th June, with her husband Joseph and their daughter Phoebe Lilian.
