  From top of Ledger: The vault of the family of/ John Gray/ who was born at West Mills/ in the year 1782 and was/ buried in the year 1848/ in a vault situated in the South Porch of St. Nicholas' Church./ Is buried here/ Martha his widow/ born Feby. 22nd. 1790/ died July 14th. 1884. Also are buried here/ their children/ Ellen Rachel/ born Aug. 23rd/ 1817/ died Feb. 14th. 1864./ John Palmer/ born June 23rd. 1820/ died Sept 1st. 1871/ James Gray/ born Jany. 5th 1821/ died April 1st 1897./ Martha Elizabeth/ born August 13th. 1815/ died March 17th. 1910./ This vault contains the Mortal Remains of a Family whose public benefactions to the Church and Charitable Institutions were many and Liberal and whose countless private deeds of Charity and generous gifts will only be known when the secrets of all hearts shall be disclosed/ " Thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a Memorial before God."

James Gray

JAMES GRAY

 
Mr. James Gray, was for half-a-century connected with the London and County Bank, being chief accountant for many years.  In 1871 he was aged 50 at Queens Road, Camberwell, a banker, London and County Bank  -  jt general manager and had just set up the pension scheme.  He died in 1887, and was buried in the family vault in the Cemetery, where his sister was laid last week. Mr. James Gray was a great admirer of stained glass, and memorial windows in the churches at East Garston, Compton and East Ilsley, also the windows over the north and south porches at Newbury, are evidences of his generous benefactions. 

The gravestone inscription includes parents (John Gray 1782 - 1848) - memorial and Martha Gray(1790 - 1884) and siblings Ellen Rachel Gray (1817 - 1864),John Palmer Gray (1820 - 1871) and James Gray (1821 - 1897)

Note: The grave inscription confirms he was born 5 January 1821 and died 1 April 1897 (not 1887 as written NWN 31 March 1910.  Also confirmed in ledger book (no. 219) from New Cross,London.
