Jessie was born in Bicester, Oxfordshire, the daughter of George (a Coal Merchant) and Hester Paxton (nee Humphries) who were married on the 12th June 1849, in Bicester. She was baptised on the 13th March 1856, in Bicester, with her sisters Hester (born 1851) and Alice (born 1855, died 1856)

Her father George was baptised on the 16th July 1813, in Battlesden, Bedfordshire, the son of William and Ann Paxton (nee Pitkin) who were married on the 29th December 1803, at St Mary, Woburn, Bedfordshire. George died aged 46, on the 3rd April 1861, in Bicester. His probate record records him as a Farmer and Coal Merchant, Effects: under £2000.

Jessie’s mother Hester was born c1825, in Oxfordshire. In 1841 she was recorded as Esther (15), living in Market Place, Bicester, with her father William (50) and Innkeeper, her mother Mary (40) and her brothers Henry (20) and John (15).  Hester died aged 35, in 1860, in Bicester.

In 1851 George (37) was recorded as a Coal Merchant, living in Bicester, Market End, Oxfordshire, with Hester (25), Jessie (1) and Susan Wheeler (20), a General Servant

The 1861 census records Tessie (11) (Jessie) and Esther (8), (Hester) living in Swan Street, Bicester Market End, with a Housekeeper, Mary Ann Coleman (56) and a House Servant, Elizabeth Brown (18). (Census taken 7th April, 4 days after their father’s death)

No record of Jessie and Hester found in 1871

The 1881 census records Jessie (30) and Hester (29), living in Craven Street, Newbury, Berkshire, with their aunt, Eliza Mills (64), their cousin, Eleanor Tucker (41) and Jessie Tucker (18) and Jessie Slocock (12), Eliza’s granddaughters. All were recorded as Ladies.

In 1891 Jessie (41) and Hester (38) were living on their own means. They were still living in Craven Street, Newbury, with their aunt, Eliza Mills (75), who was also living on her own means and her granddaughter Jessie Tucker (28), who was working as a Governess.

Their aunt, Eliza Mills died aged 76, on the 14th August 1892, she was laid to rest in a private grave, in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th August.

Jessie died aged 44, on the 1st April 1895, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road on the 6th April.

(Jessie’s sister Hester died aged 84 in 1936, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 9th May, with Jessie)
