Mordaunt Froude Payne (1864 – 1894)

                                   

Mordaunt Froude Payne was born in 1864 in East Anstey in Devon, the son of William and Esther, nee Prewett, Payne. He was baptized on 22 December 1864 at St Michael in East Anstey. Harry’s mother Esther died in September 1865 and she was buried on 19 September at St Mary in Olveston in Gloucestershire.

 

In the 1871 census Mordaunt was recorded living with his father William and his second wife Jane along with his sister Frances Kate and also four servants in East Anstey. William was a groom.

 

Ten years later in the 1881 census Mordaunt was still living with his father William, his wife Jane, sister Frances Kate and aunt Mary Munro but had moved to the Black Bear, Market Street in Newbury. William was a licensed victualler, Mordaunt and Frances were both assisting in the inn.

 

Mordaunt was recorded in Northbrook Street in Newbury with his sister Frances Kate Gibson and her husband Frederick in the 1891 census. Mordaunt was a groom and Frederick a watch maker.

 

Mordaunt died on 17 November 1894 at Wash Common aged 30 and he was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 21 November. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 22 November as below.  

 

PAYNE – Nov. 17, at Wash Common, Newbury, Mordaunt Froude Payne, aged 30.

 

Harry’s father William was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 11 November 1890 and his step mother Jane on 12 April 1901. In addition, his brother Harry Payne was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery just a few months after Mordaunt on 3 March 1895.
