Charles Blatch.

Charles Blatch 1814 to 1894 married Elizabeth Millicent 1829 to 1852.

In 1850 they had a child Sarah Ann Blatch and shortly afterwards in 1852 Elizabeth died. Charles remarried Maria Griffin in June quarter 1857.  Both Charles and Maria are buried in NRC

His daughter Sarah Ann Blatch was a servant at 1 bridge St for the bank manager, William B Nalder.  1899 Kelly’s Directory has “The Capital and Counties Bank Ltd., Newbury Old Bank, The Bridge”

The story is that whilst his wife and children where at the nearby St Nic's church he made Sarah pregnant.  He paid her money to keep quiet and she saved it for her son, William E Blatch 1876 to 1957 so that he could have an education and he became a successful solicitor.

Sarah Ann subsequently married William Crooke(1848-1890) who was a game keeper and they moved to Sudbury in Warwickshire. They had further children

The story is provided by William's gd daughter Mary (née Crooke) via her friend Lisa Haynes
