Jessie Louisa Martin
c1863-1936
Jessie, her parents, siblings and early life:
Jessie was born c1863, in Bath, Somerset, the daughter of Owen and Eleanor Tucker (nee Mills) who were married on the 11th April 1861, in Bicester, Oxfordshire.
Her father Owen was baptised (Baptist) on the 27th April 1833, in Somerset, the son of Edward and Sarah Tucker (nee Smith) who were married on the 8th April 1823, at St Michael, Bath, Somerset.
Her mother Eleanor was born in Bicester, Oxfordshire, the daughter of William and Eliza Mills (nee Paxton) who were married on the 7th August 1838, in Bicester (both were single, William was a Chemist. Dads were William Mills, a Gentleman and William Paxton, a Farmer)
Owen and Eleanor also had the following children, born in Bath:
Rose, born c1862 (died 1862, soon after birth)
James, born 1863 (died 1863, soon after birth)
Joseph, born 1865 (died 1865, soon after birth)
Florence Mary, born 1866 (died aged 7, in 1873)
The 1871 census records Owen (38) as a Surgeon, living at 27 Claverton Street, Bath, Somerset, with Eleanor (32) and their daughters, Jessie (8) (mistakenly recorded as Sophie on ancestry) and Florence (4).
Jessie’s father Owen died aged 42, on the 16th October 1873, in Bath.
The 1881 census records Jessie (18) living in Craven Street, Newbury, Berkshire, with her widowed mother Eleanor (41), her grandmother mother Eliza Mills (64), her mother’s cousins, Jessie Paxton (30), Hester Paxton (29) and her cousin, Jessie Slocock (12). All were recorded as Ladies.
Jessie’s mother Eleanor died aged 41, on the 26th April 1881, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29th April.
The 1891 census records Jessie (28), as a Governess, living at 9, Craven Street, Newbury, with her grandmother, Eliza Mills (75) and her grandmother’s nieces, Jessie Paxton (41) and Hester Paxton (38). All three were recorded living on their own means.
Jessie’s grandmother Eliza Mills died aged 76, on the 14th August 1892. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th August.

Fathers: Robert Martin, a Saddler and Owen Tucker, a Surgeon
Witnesses: Mary Ann Adey, John Flint, Edith M. Martin, Jessie E. Slocock and Edward Martin
In 1901 Robert (35) was recorded as a Sadler, Rope and Twine Manufacturer, living at 7 Craven Street, Newbury with Jessie (38) and a general domestic servant, Annie Colbourne (16).
The 1911 census records Robert (45), a Saddler and Rope Manufacturer, Jessie (48) and a domestic servant, Emily Pitworth (21), living at 7 Craven Street, Newbury
The 1921 census records Robert Martin (55) and his wife Jessie Louisa Martin (58), living at “Langford” St John’s Road, Newbury. Also recorded living with them was Hester Paxton (69) (recorded as Nester on ancestry).
Jessie died aged 75 on the 16th January 1936. She was laid to rest with her grandmother mother Eliza Mills, on the 20th January.
Robert died the following year, aged 71, on the 24th April. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery, with Jessie and her grandmother Eliza, on the 28th April 1937.
