James Stratton

c1810-1891

James was baptised on the 30^th September 1810, in Hamstead Marshall, Berkshire, the son of John and Martha Stratton (nee Beakhurst) who were married on the 26^th May 1806, in Hamstead Marshall.

His father John was born c1766, in Inkpen, Hampshire. John died aged 87, in 1853.

His mother Martha Backhurst was baptised in 1785, in Hamstead Marshall, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Beakhurst (nee Dows) who were married in 1781, in Hamstead Marshall. Martha died aged 61, in 1846.

John and Martha also had the following children baptised in Hamstead Marshall:

Maria, 5^th March 1809

John, 2^nd October 1814 (died aged 20, buried 17^th May 1835, at St Mary, Hamstead Marshall)

Thomas William, 18^th February 1816 (dad a Farmer)

Charles 31^st August 1817 (dad a Farmer)

Mary, 5^th December 1819 (dad a Farmer)

Fanny, 30^th December 1821 (dad a Labourer)

George, 24^th February 1828 (dad a Labourer)

In 1841 James (25) was living with his parents John (70) and Martha (50) in Hamstead Marshall.

The 1851 census records James (40), as an Agricultural Labourer, living in Hamstead Marshall, with his widowed father, John (87), an Annuitant.

In 1861 James (50) was working as an Ostler, at The White Hart Inn, Hamstead Marshall.

The 1871 census records James (60), as a Labourer, boarding in Hamstead Marshall, with his brother Thomas (52) and his family.

The 1881 census records James (70) as an Invalid, living alone in Kintbury Road, Hamstead Marshall, Berkshire.

James died aged 81, in the Newbury Workhouse on the 19^th March 1891. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 23^rd March.
