CROSOER – Mar.12, at Mrs. Shackel’s, Northbrook Street, Newbury, Alice Louise Crosoer, daughter of the late Edwin Stone Crosoer, after 24 hours most painful illness, aged 17. “In the midst of life, we are in death.”

Alice Louise Crosoer

c1870-1887

Alice Louise was born in Lambeth, Surrey, she was baptised on the 8th May 1870, at St Mark, Kensington, the daughter of Edwin Stone (a Banker’s Clerk) and Mary Elizabeth Crosoer (nee Ratcliffe) who were married in 1863, in Kent.

Her father Edwin was baptised in 1837, in St George, Deal, Kent, the son of William and Catharine Crosoer (nee Rayner) who were married in 1819, in Sandwich, Kent.

Alice’s mother Mary Elizabeth was baptised in 1837, at St Nicholas, Ash Next Sandwich, Kent, the daughter of George and Susanna Ratcliffe (nee Marsh) who were married in 1833, at St Nicholas, Ash Next Sandwich.

Edwin and Mary also had a daughter, Kate, born in 1865 and a son Ernest George, born in 1867, both born in Lambeth. Ernest George died in Lambeth c1868.

The 1871 census records Alice (1), living in Camberwell New Road, Lambeth, with her father Edwin (34), a Bank Clerk, her mother Mary Elizabeth (33), her sister Kate (5), her aunt, Georgina Ratcliffe (21) and a servant.

Alice’s father Edwin died aged 36 in 1873 (death registered in Lambeth).

The 1881 census records Alice Louise (11) living in an Infant Orphan Asylum, in Wanstead, Essex. Her widowed mother Mary Elizabeth (40), a Housekeeper and her sister Kate (15), were recorded as visitors at the home James Williamson (28), a Chemist, in the High Street, Eastry, Kent.

Alice Louise died aged 17 on the 12th March 1887, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th March.

In 1911 Alice’s mother Mary Elizabeth (73) and her sister Kate (41) were living at 33 Laurel Grove, Penge, Surrey.

Mary Elizabeth died aged 74 in 1912, in Croydon.
