SEYMOUR - May 15th, at 4 Greenham-road, after much suffering, Charles Thomas, dearly beloved husband of Ethel Seymour and eldest son of Mr. J. Seymour, 34 Jack-street, aged 33 years.

Charles Thomas, his parents, siblings and early life:

Charles Thomas was born in Newbury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 19th June 1900 at St Nicolas Church Newbury, the son of John and Annie Seymour (nee Silvey) who were married on the 3rd May 1885, at the Primitive Methodist Church, Newbury.

His father John was born in 1864, in Hampstead Norreys, Berkshire, the son of Charles and Harriet Seymour (nee Middleton) who were married on the 7th July 1861, in Hermitage Chapel, Hampstead Norris, Berkshire. John died in 1934, in Newbury.

His mother Annie was born c1866, in Welford, Berkshire (birth registered as Elizabeth Ann, recorded as Emily Ann in the 1871 census), the daughter of Thomas and Mary Silvey (nee Annetts) who were married in 1855 (marriage registered in Newbury) Annie died aged 54 in 1921, in Newbury.

John and Annie also had the following children:

Annie Beatrice, born 1887

John, born 1890

Rose Ellen, born c1892

Harriet Ada, born 1895

Albert Edward, born 28th May 1905, baptised 18th July 1905, at St Nicolas, Newbury

Emily Gladys, born 6th July 1906, baptised 30th September 1906, at St Nicolas, Newbury

 

In 1901 John (36), a Blacksmith’s Labourer, Annie (35) and their children, Annie Beatrice (13), John (10), Rose Ellen (8), Harriet (5) and Charles (10 months) were living at 34 Jack Street, Newbury.

The family were still living at 34 Jack Street in 1911, as follows: John (47), a Brewer’s Labourer, Annie (45), John (20), a Butcher’s ?man, Charles Thomas (10), Albert Edward (5), Gladys Emily (4) and a lodger.

Charles Thomas in later life:

In 1918 Charles was working as a Fishmonger’s Assistant. On the 4th June 1918 he went to Reading to enlist in the 1st World War.

In 1921 Charles (21) was working as a Labourer at the Newbury Racecourse. He was living at 34 Marsh Street, Newbury with his widowed father John (56), a Phoenix Brewery Drayman, his brother Albert (16), a Grocer’s Assistant at the International Stores, his sisters, Harriet Ada (26), looking after the home duties, Gladys (14), a Toy Factory Labouer, at Donnington Toy Mills and a boarder.

Charles married a widow, Ether Lovell (nee Goddard) in 1925.

(Ethel was born on the 28th July 1890 in Greenham, Berkshire the daughter of Henry and Eva Goddard (nee Lambdin) who were married in 1886 (marriage registered in Newbury). She married Charles Milton Lovell on the 19th December 1914, at St John the Evangelist, Newbury. They had a son, Charles born 1917 (died 1917), and another son, Charles Milton, born in 1918. Ethel was widowed later that year).

Charles Thomas died aged 33 in 1934, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 19th May.

The 1939 Register records Ethel and her son Charles Lovell, a Milkman, living at 1 Orts Road, Newbury.

Ethel Seymour died aged 88, in 1979, in Newbury.
