James Boykett Boxall Phillips was born circa 1840 in Woolhampton. James married Mary Jane Wickens on 4 April 1859 at St Mary in Reading. Mary Jane was born in 1840 in Newbury.

 

James and Mary had 12 children all born in Thatcham. They were James Boykett (born in 1859), Caroline Annie (1861), Sarah Martha (1863), Mary Maria (1865), Bessie Jane (1868), George William (1872), Christina Helen (1874), Charles Edward (1876), Katie Edith (1879), Elsie Marion (1881), Henry John (1884) and Agnes (1885).

 

The youngest child Agnes was born on 2 August 1885. Sadly, she died aged only 5 days on 7 August and was buried at Newtown Road Cemetery on 8 August. An announcement appeared in the Newbury Weekly News dated 13 August as below.

 

PHILLIPS – Aug. 7, at Northcroft Lane, Newbury, Agnes, infant daughter of C. B. and M. J. Phillips, aged 5 days.

 

Charles and Mary Jane continued to live in the Newbury area. Charles died on 12 July 1916 aged 76 while living at 19 Adey’s Buildings in Stroud Green, his occupation was recorded as a blacksmith. He was buried on 15 July at Shaw Cemetery. Mary Jane died on 18 February 1920 aged 79 while living at St Johns in Newbury and she was buried at Shaw Cemetery on 24 February.
