THE LATE MR. GILES

Our obituary column of to-day contains a notice of the decease of Mr. Giles, who is well known in the town as having for many years been the manager of the branch office of the Reading Mercury.
The deceased was seized with a fit of apoplexy last Saturday at Reading, and although medical assistance was at once called in, and he appeared somewhat better during the early part of this week, he subsequently sank under under the stroke, and expired yesterday afternoon.
Mr. Giles has, we understand, been connected with the Mercury for a period of nearly forty years, and the almost public nature of his position combined with the courteous disposition which he always displayed, will cause his loss to be much felt and regretted. There are few other persons in the town who have been so intimately acquainted with its history for so long a time; and we think we may justly say that he has always exercised the power which his connection with so influential a journal has given him in a just and temperate manner, and with a sincere desire to promote the best interests of the town.
