    Edward Samuel was born to Journeyman Bricklayer Frederick James and Jane, nee Hayward, later Gibbons, of Cheap St, Newbury. He married Ann Maria Edwards daughter of an Agricultural Labourer of Sanham Green, Hungerford in 1879. Before marriage she was a Farm Worker, living in Lower Green, Inkpen with her widowed mother and siblings. Edward & Ann had 9 children. In 1881 they lived at 7, Brixton Rise,Cheap St, Newbury and he was working as a Pig Butcher. By 1901, they were at 2 Industrial Cottages, Jubilee Rd and he was working as a Bricklayer. By 1911 he was a Builder. They moved to 39, Greenham Rd by 1827 but he died at Quarrystone, Burghclere n 1933. He left £1263 to son Albert James, Platelayer. FUNERAL AT NEWTOWN ROAD CEMETERY
The funeral of Mr. Edward Samuel Chivers, of "Quarrystone", Burghclere, took place on Friday last at the Newtown-road Cemetery. The deceased was 73 years of age. The first part of the service was held at the Methodist Church, Bartholomew-street, Newbury, and was conducted by the Rev. W. Lawson Jones. Mr. C. Griffin was at the organ and played two of the deceased's favourite hymns, "0 happy day" and "0, God, our help in ages past."
The mourners were: Mrs. Chivers (widow), Arthur, Albert, John and Alfred (sons), Janet and Annie (daughters), Gertie, Edie and Gladys (daughters-in-law), Mrs. Edwards (sister-in-law), Reginald Edie (Jubilee-road), Mildred Edie (Newtown) and Mervyn (grandchildren), Mr. T.W. Chivers (nephew), Mrs. North, Mrs. Titchener, Mrs Cooper, Mrs. E. Davis, Mrs. W. Davis and Mrs. Smith (nieces).

Also Ann Maria Chivers died 19 November 1936 aged 78 and Sarah Jane Chivers (Janet) born 15 February 1890. Died 28 May 1962 aged 72.
