DEATH OF AN EX-POLICEMAN
Mr. Israel Smith, of Gloucester-road, died suddenly on Saturday evening. He had been out for a walk in the afternoon, but complained of feeling unwell on his return and went to bed. He shortly afterwards expired from heart failure. His health had been indifferent for several years and in consequence he had resigned the post of caretaker at Newbury Museum. The deceased was a member of the Berks. Constabulary for many years, the greater part of which time he was stationed at Newbury as a Constable. On removal to Basildon he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant, and afterwards retired on a pension.

The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon at Newbury Cemetery, the Rev. L. H. Majendie officiating.

The mourners were the son and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. Sargeant. A body of the Berkshire Police attended to say the last respect to their late colleague, including Sergts. Rufey, Durmon, Gallop and Pinchin, and twelve constables. They attended the house of the deceased, four acted as bearers and the others marched in front of the funeral car. The coffin plate was inscribed

aged 84

There were a number of wreaths from relatives and friends.
The funeral arrangements were carried out by A.J. Chivers of Cheap-street.
