Whitway

Petty sessions, Tuesday (before W.H. Kingsmill Esq) – Eli Hawkins and Daniel Aldridge both of Kingsclere were charged with having unlawfully in their possession 5 rabbits. PC Dodd stationed at Whitway, while on duty in the road leading from Whitway to Newbury, meeting Hawkins and being suspicious, stopped him and proceeded to search him, finding on him certain rabbit nets. When asking where Lillywhite ( meaning Aldridge) was he replied – just behind; a little further on he met Aldridge, and found upon him 5 rabbits which he said he had bought from a man at Itchingwell for 4 shillings, but did not know his name. The Bench considering the case had been proved, fined each defendant £1 and costs 6s. Hawkins paid saying it was downright robbery, and as the needful was not forthcoming from Aldridge he was removed in custody.
