EDWIN FRANCIS SOUTHBY
The funeral took place yesterday of the late Mr. Edwin Francis Southby, who died on Sunday at the age of 73. He was the eldest surviving son of the late Mr. John Head Southby, of West Ilsley, and was one of the earliest Englishmen who went out to Melbourne in the search for gold in the early fifties.
He afterwards settled in New Zealand for a time, returning in 1878 to reside with his mother at Donnington-villas. He was probably one of the last of those who sought fortune in the goldfields. He was a thorough sportsman, an expert shot, and took keen enjoyment in all outdoor recreations.
A large number of relatives and friends assembled around the grave yesterday afternoon, including Mrs. J. Ellis, Mr. A. Ellis, Mr. D.R. Jones, Col. Hogge etc
