MELBOURNE TOOMER

Melbourne Toomer did not live long to enjoy the fame of having received a letter from the Queen. He died in the Workhouse on Sunday from an attack of ague.

He was one of the first Foundation boys of Newbury Grammar school, and was a man of considerable ability, few having a better acquaintance with the works of Shakespeare, which he would aptly quote when occasion prompted. But his talents availed him little, and his opportunities were wasted.
