WILLIAM WHITEHEAD
THE LATE SERGT. WHITEHEAD
Our obituary of to-day contains the name of Sergt. Whitehead, who for a period of 35 years was recruiting sergeant stationed in Newbury. During this time he has enlisted some thousands. He was regarded as a strictly honourable man in his profession, and sedulously avoided anything like unfair measures for entrapping recruits into the army. Hence he was highly respected by the recruits who never failed to report themselves whenever they returned on furlough to the neighbourhood..
He belonged to the Grenadier Guards, but it did not fall to his lot to see much active service. He nevertheless received a silver medal for excellent conduct.
