WILLIAM JOHN SUMPSTER
SUDDEN DEATH IN NORTHBROOK STREET
A melancholy case of sudden death occurred on Monday morning to Mr. W.J. Sumpster, eldest son of Mr. W. Sumpster, of Northbrook-street.
The deceased was an accomplished and promising youth. He was born in 1851, at Barnet, and educated at Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in that town, carrying off at the early age of 14 the head prize at a competitive examination. At 15 he was appointed junior clerk to a branch of Her Majesty’s Inland Revenue having offices at Charterhouse-square, London. This office he filled to the great satisfaction of his superiors, and received an excellent testimonial when failing health compelled him to retire.
Living at home with his parents for the last two years he has engaged in various literary pursuits, obtaining prizes on two occasions for essays which he had written in open competition.
Devotedly attached to the Church of England and occasionally writing in (sic) her behalf, it is not surprising that one of his last acts should have been to assist in decorating the chancel of the Parish Church only a few hours before his death.
