GENERAL SUPPORTER OF NEWBURY AND DISTRICT HOSPITAL
The death of Miss Harriet Jane Wasey which occurred at her residence, Foscote Lodge, Donnington Square, Newbury, on Thursday last, removes one who did a great deal of good work in the town over a long period.

She came from a well-known local family, being the second daughter of the late Rev. John Spearman Wasey, vicar of Compton, Berks., and had attained the good age of 84 years. She had been ill for about two months.

Miss Wasey was a most generous supporter of Newbury District Hospital, and not only helped financially but worked energetically for its welfare. She was the donor of the original X-ray plant, which served the institution for a long time. She was associated with the hospital from its foundation, and for 30 years was a member of the committee. Besides regularly attending the meetings, she took a personal interest in the patients treated at the hospital. She was joint donor, together with the late Mr. Malcom Gird, the Newbury Hospital Football Cup, which, through years of competitions, has been the means of raising over £500 for the Hospital.

Her generosity and kindness found expression in many other ways, and she was a generous supporter of St Mary's Church, Speenhamland, helping in parochial affairs, and previously she worked in St. John's parish.

The funeral took place quietly on Monday afternoon, the service at St. Mary’s Church, Speenhamland, being conducted by the vicar, the Rev. W.J. Holloway, who also officiated at the graveside in the Newtown-road Cemetery. The deceased lady was buried beside her sister Miss Mary Wasey, who died in June 1929 at the age of 86.

The family mourners were; Mr. and Mrs. L.T. Wasey (brother and sister-in-law), Mrs. Edward Wasey and Mrs. G.K. Wasey (sisters-in-law), Major and Mrs. W.S. Wasey, Mrs. McMillan, Mrs. Warneby. Miss Howard and Miss Dorothy Howard (nephews and nieces), Mr. G.K. Wasey (brother) was unable to be present owing to illness.

Others present at the church and cemetery were: Mrs. Coe, Mrs. Lipscombe senior, Mr. Henry Flint, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Calvin-Smith, Mr. J. W. Douglas, Mr. J. Trevelyan Louch, Mr. John Freeman, Mr. W.J. Jones, Dr. W.B. Heywood (representing Newbury District Hospital), Mrs Heywood, Mr. Arthur T. Watson, Mrs. Holloway and Miss Edith Cruse.

Wreaths were sent by: Lionel and Edith, Gladys and Pam; Amy and children; Mr. and Mrs. G.K. Wasey; Miss Catherine Reid; and two wreaths without names attached.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr. E.B. Hitchman, Oxford-street, Newbury.

This obituary entry is awaiting verification.
