WILLIAM REECE LEWIS

DEATH OF MR. W.R. LEWIS

NEWBURY PORK BUTCHER

The death took place on Sunday of Mr. William Reece Lewis, of 10, Porchester-road, Newbury, who for many years carried out the business of a pork butcher at 102, Bartholomew-street. He was 75 years of age.

Born at Newbury, Mr. Lewis was educated at the Boys’ British School under the late Mr. J.C. Slight. He became a partner in the business of the late Mr. H. Hassell, at 102 Bartholomew street, and upon Mr. Hassell’s death he acquired the business himself. This he carried on until his retirement about ten years ago, since when it has been in the hands of his daughter. He was constant in his attendance at the Newbury and Hungerford fat stock shows, and made a speciality of displaying in his shop widow prize winning pigs he had purchased at the show sales.

Mr. Lewis was for many years a regular worshipper at the Methodist Church in Bartholomew-street. All his life he was a staunch Rechabite. He was a quiet, reticent type of man, his chief interest being in his garden. His wife died four years ago, and he is survived by one son and one daughter.

The funeral took place yesterday (Wednesday) at the Newtown-road Cemetery, where the service was conducted by the Rev. A. Russell Potts.

The family mourners were Mr. and Mrs. W.M. R. Lewis (son and daughter-in-law).

Long list of others present at the funeral.
