ARTHUR SEPTIMUS STILLMAN

FUNERAL OF THE LATE MR. A.S. STILLMAN

The funeral of the late Mr. Arthur Septimus Stillman, took place on Saturday afternoon. In recognition of the long official connection which deceased had had with the Parish Church, the first part of the burial service was conducted there by the Rev. W. Pheasant. The ringers gave a muffled peal, and the coffin was received at the western entrance by the Churchwardens (Mr. Walter Money, F.S.A., and Mr. Ald. Adey), while present in the church were many friends in addition to a numerous body of Oddfellows, representing the three lodges, the “Loyal Briton's Pride," of which deceased had been a member for 37 years, the "Jack of Newbury.'' and the “Past Grands.”

The mutes were carried by Mr. Henry Pratt, secretary, and Mr. H. Bailey, corresponding secretary, who headed the funeral procession. Messrs. H. Wilder, E. Crisp, and John Rolfe attended as a deputation from the Newbury Working Men's Conservative Club.

The service at the grave was read by the Rev. W. Pheasant, and at the conclusion Bro. F. Staunton, secretary of the Past Grands Lodge, read in an impressive manner, the customary funeral charge.

The funeral arrangements were carried out by Messrs. Lucas and Son, Bartholomew-street.

THE LATE MR. ARTHUR SEPTIMUS STILLMAN
Our obituary column today contains the notice of the death of Mr. Arthur Septimus Stillman, of West Mills, after a long illness. The deceased was the son of the late Mr. George Stillman, for many years parish clerk of Newbury, and also apparitor to the Bishop of Oxford. and it was on one occasion when he was allowed to accompany his father that deceased was present when Bishop Randall was ordained deacon.
The deceased was a senior member of the Britons' Pride Lodge of Oddfellows, and also belonged to the Past Grands Lodge, and took an active and intelligent interest in all that appertained to the welfare of the Order, being elected to various lodge offices. He was also a member of the committee of the Conservative Club with which he was identified from the beginning and he also spoke of his connection with a Working Men's Club started over thirty years ago. Deceased was, however, best known in his connection with Newbury Church, of which he was verger for many years.
Mr. Stillman was by trade a locksmith and gas fitter, being respectively in the employ of Mr. Alderman Jackson, the late Mr. Charles Wheeler and Mr. Samuel Elliott.
It is nearly two years since he was with a pulmonary affection, and was laid by nearly eighteen months, passing away on Monday evening last, leaving to mourn their loss a widow and four sons and three daughters. He will be buried on Saturday, the body will be taken to Newbury Parish Church at 2.30pm where a service will be held, and thence to the Cemetery. Many of the Oddfellows have expressed a wish to follow to the grave their deceased colleague.
