The next landlord, Henry Halliwell had no better luck, he too died after only 18 months in charge. Henry had been a coachman at Lambourn Place for 30 years before he took on the Rose & Thistle -the local paper suggested the move to the bright lights of Newbury was too much for his 'highly excitable disposition' and may have hastened his end.  His widow, Elizabeth, took on the licence and broke the tragic sequence; she remained as licensee until 1893 retiring five years before her death.
