GEORGE SCARR HIGGONS
The Late Mr GEORGE SCARR HIGGONS. - This gentleman, who was one of the oldest of our townsmen, passed away on Friday last, after a brief illness from paralysis. For some years past he had resided with his relative Mr. Hanington, though formerly he was in business as a draper, and occupying a leading position in the borough. As far back as 1842 Mr.Higgons was Mayor of Newbury, and carried out the duties of the office of Chief Magistrate with great public spirit. He was exceedingly genial, extremely liberal-hearted, and was highly respected, as was evidenced by the general way in which his neighbours closed their shutters on the day of the funeral on Tuesday last. He was laid to rest in the cemetery, the Rector reading the burial service |

George Scarr Higgons (1811-87). Born at Clanfield, Oxon. Mercer and draper at 19 Northbrook Street.
2 Alderman. The Literary and Scientific Institution was opened in Northbrook Street by Lord Carnarvon in August 1843.
3 At some time after 1841 George formed a partnership with his assistant Edward Hanington (1812-70), brother of his wife Jane. In 1854 this partnership was dissolved
4 and George moved to London where he practiced as a stuff agent. Evidently this activity did not succeed, as by 1871 he was obliged to return to Newbury and reside at 19 Northbrook Street with Edward’s son Harman Hanington, Mayor in 1894, who carried on the drapery business after Edward’s death.
5 His wife Jane (1816-1890) stayed with him with these moves. |
