DEATH OF MR HERBERT HUMPHRIES

KEEN RIFLE SHOT and FOOTBALLER

Funeral at Newbury

The death took place on August 16th at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading, of Mr Herbert Humphries, of 14 West street, Newbury, in his 67th year. He was a well known Newburian, and a member of the old Volunteers for many years.  He joined the National Reserve when formed and served throughout the War, first at the Racecourse and later on the East Coast , Isle of Man and Scotland.  He was a prominent member of the Newbury Air Rifle League from the start until recently. In his younger  days he was a member of the Newbury Excelsior Football Club.  A painter and decorator by trade, he put in most of his early time with Mr Boyer of Northbrook street.  Since the ending of that firm he had worked for other businesses in the town.

The funeral was on Monday at the Newtown road Cemetery, a service being held first at the Newbury Parish Church, where a number of old work-mates and members of the old Volunteers were present.

There was a large number of mourners as follows: His widow, Messrs Harry Humphries and Bert Humphries sons); Mrs Maskell, Mrs Hawkins, Mrs Marshall, Miss Winnie Humphries and Miss Gladys Humphries (daughters); Mr and Mrs Curry (brother-in-law and sister); Mr and Mrs Henry Humphries (brother and sister-in-law); Mr Alf Humphries (brother); Mrs H Humphries and Mrs B Humphries (daughters-in-law); Messrs Maskell, Hawkins and Marshall (sons-in-law); Mr Fred Hunt (brother-in-law); Mr and Mrs Gibbs (niece and nephew); Mr and Mrs Harris.
