HENRY KEENS

THE LATE MR. HENRY KEENS

The death of Mr. Henry Keens took place on Thursday last at his residence, St. Mary's-Hill, Newbury. The deceased was throughout the greater part of his life identified with the trade of the town, having for many years successfully carried on the business of currier and leather cutter.

For some years he occupied a seat in the town council, and in 1858 was, in succession to Mr. J.P. Jackson, elected mayor of the borough. It was during his year of office that the Archaeological Society visited Newbury. Mr. Keens was also one of the trustees of the Municipal Charities, being at the time of his death one of the old Board.

Mr. Keens was for over forty years a member of the Baptist Church, and for some length of time was its treasurer, an office he relinquished, in conjunction with that of deacon, about three years ago on account of advancing age and ill health.

The funeral took place on Saturday at the Cemetery, being conducted by Mr. Alfred Jackson.
