Welcome Day report
Wild Flowers impressive
Our last Welcome Day was the most poorly attended so far. We put this down to competition from the Waterways festival and local gardens open for charity. Also we did much less advertising than usual. So I suppose it shows that advertising, whether it be flyers or posters really works.
For the Friends that came to meet and greet it was nevertheless a pleasant day, the highlight being the fantastic wild flower display. One grave near the south wall is completely covered with orange hawkweed, and many graves are pushing up daisies; ox-eye daisies to be exact. Though we are currently without a wild flower expert to help us with identification I am reliably informed that we have a first sighting of Foxglove and Lamb’s Ear. And there are now carpets of yellow vetch, clover, yellow ones that look like dandelions but taller (!) and a multitude of grasses. If you live nearby do go and have a wander around before the strimmers arrive in the near future.
The trees that were pollarded over the winter are all sprouting. We saw lots of bees but very few butterflies – maybe later? |
