Sarah Soper

1829-1861

 

Sarah Prouting was born in Snelsmore she was baptised on the 18th October 1829 in Chieveley Berkshire and was the daughter of John & Eliza Prouting (nee Williams) who were married on the 5th March 1825 in St Andrew’s Church Boxford. (John’s surname recorded as Prowting) John was a Carpenter.

In 1851 Sarah was working as a Servant in the household of William Keens (Tailor & Draper) in Northbrook Street Newbury. She married George Soper (a Tailor) in 1852 in Newbury. George was a widower and had two children Lucy Ann aged 6 and Charlotte aged 7.

Sarah & George had the following children:

Elizabeth 1854

Edward John 1856

 Albert 1857 (died aged 4 in 1862 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 28th May)

Walter 1860 (died in 1860 he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 16th March)

Harriet 1861-1861

Sarah died aged 31 in 1861 she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 25th March.

 Baby Harriet died less than three weeks after her mother she was laid to rest on the 15th April 1861 at St Mary the Virgin Chieveley. (Both Sarah aged 8 and Harriet aged 2 months had gone to stay with their grandparents John & Eliza Prouting in Chieveley after their mother’s death.).

George and his children, Charlotte, Elizabeth Edward and Albert were living in Caroline Place Newbury in 1861. In 1871 George was living in Hazell’s Yard. He died aged 58 in 1880 and was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 18th December.
