Thomas Smith  1850 - 1929

 

Thomas was born in Kingsclere in 1850. He was the third child of William and Sylvia Smith and in 1861 they were living on Stroud Green, Newbury. William was an agricultural labourer. Sylvia died in December 1862 aged 40 years. William remarried to Jane Vinen in June 1863.

By 1871 they were living at Greenham Mills. Thomas was still living at home and now had a further seven siblings. Jane was the mother of the youngest three.            

In 1872 Thomas married Harriett Hunt. He was a corn dealer labourer and they first lived at Mill Lane Greenham.

By 1881 they had two sons William born 1874 and Albert born 1876, also a daughter Florence Kate born 1878.

On 1891 census they had three more children, Bertha born 1882, Arthur born 1886 and Harriett born 1891. Thomas was a boiler maker and they were living atJackson’s Cottages,Roseberry Place, Greenham.

Harriett died 1900 aged 49 years. She is buried in NRC.

Thomas remarried to Katherine Mary Tombs, born 1868, in December 1900.
