He was born c. 1826 in Charlton, Wilts. He married his first wife Ellen Rudman on 10 January 1850 in Chippenham. They had 7 children and she died aged 37 years in 1868. He later married Emma Lines on 1 December 1870 in the City of London. He started work as a Draper and then in 1871 he is an Ironmonger in partnership with his brother-in-law Albert Lines in Chippenham.

By 1881 he is living in Calne,  Wilts., still an Ironmonger. From the 1891 census he has moved to Hawthorne House, Queens Road, Newbury, and  he is variously a Grocer,  a Baker, and by 1901 also a Coal Merchant.   He died at Hawthorne House on 20 January 1915 and he is buried with his wife Emma.
