He was born c. 1813 either in Scotland (1861 census) or in Rugby, Staffordshire (1871 census). He was the husband of Tamar, nee Mansfield, (1823-1908). 

Four children are recorded: Charles Mansfield Laurie (b. 1844 Burwell, Cambs.), Sarah (b. 1850 Exning,  Newmarket)), Harriet (b.1854 Exning, Newmarket)) and William  (b.1858 Newbury). 

 In the 1851 census it is recorded that he is the Porter at the Newmarket Union Workhouse. In 1861 he was the Publican of the Castle Tap in Northbrook Street. In the 1871 census he is recorded as a labourer living in Independent Chapel Yard where he died on 21 April 1876 aged 63 years.  He is buried with his wife Tamar Laurie and their grandson Percy Laurie Russell (1878-1917), son of their daughter Sarah who married James John Russell. They are also buried in Newtown Road Cemetery.
