Mary White

1792-1877

Mary, her parents and siblings:

Mary and her twin brother Joseph were born on the 21^st September 1792, they were baptised on the 14^th October 1792, in Midgham, Berkshire, the children of James and Patience Johnson (nee Hutchins) who were married on the 11^th April 1784, in Overton, Hampshire.

James and Patience also had the following children:

Phillip, baptised 7^th November 1784, in Overton, Hampshire

Hannah baptised 30^th November 1794 (born 5^th Nov.) at St Mary, Thatcham, Berkshire.

Mary’s father James Johnson was born c1753 (place unknown). James died aged 45, in 1798. He was buried on the 23^rd March, at St Mary, Thatcham, Berkshire

Mary’s mother Patience, was baptised on the 18^th December 1763, in Overton, Hampshire, the daughter of Robert Hutchins, Junior and Patience Hutchins (nee Allen) who were married on the 27^th October 1761, in Tunworth, Hampshire.

Mary’s mother remarried on the 23^rd November 1799, at St Mary, Thatcham. Her 2^nd husband was Samuel Tidbury. Samuel and Patience had a son Charles, baptised on the 25^th March 1800, in Thatcham. Patience died age 72, in 1839, she was buried on the 1^st December, at St Mary, Thatcham. (Abode at time of death, Ashmore Green)

Mary in later life:

By 1814 Mary was in a relationship with Thomas White. Mary gave birth to an illegitimate daughter, Sarah Ann who was baptised on the 23^rd October 1814, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, as Sarah Ann White, illegitimate daughter of Thomas White, Cabinet Maker, Northbrook Street, Newbury, mother Mary Johnson.

The 1815 census of Newbury records Mary (22) and her daughter Sarah Ann Johnson, living in Perris’s Yard on the east side of Northbrook Street, Newbury, with a Thomas Palmer (39), his wife Mary (35) and their children, Thomas (10) and Elizabeth (6).

Mary married Thomas White on the 31^st July 1816, at St Luke, Old Street, Finsbury, London.

(Thomas was baptised on the 11^th August 1793, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, the son of Isaac and Sarah White (nee Bailey) who were married on the 11^th July 1773, at St Nicolas Church Newbury).

Thomas and Mary also had the following children baptised at St Nicolas, Newbury:

George Henry, 22^nd December 1816 (died aged 4, buried 22^nd December 1820, at St Nicolas, Newbury)

Charles Edgar, 17^th January 1819

Henry, 7^th February 1821                   (dad recorded as a Cabinet Maker on all baptism records)

Ellen, 9^th June 1822

Emily, 26^th September 1824

Thomas, 21^st December 1826

George, 5^th July 1829

John, 10^th June 1835 (died aged 16 months, buried 8^th January 1836, at St Nicolas)

Mary, born c1831 (no baptism found)

In 1841 Thomas (45), a Cabinet Maker, was living in Northbrook Street, Newbury with his children, Henry (15), a Tailor’s Apprentice, Emily (15), Thomas (14), George (12) and Mary (10). Mary (45), a Charwoman and Ellen (15), a Seamstress, were also living in Northbrook Street but not in the same household.

In 1851 Thomas (51), a Cabinet Maker, Mary (52) and their daughter Mary (19), a Dressmaker, were recorded living at 8 Winchcombe Place, Newbury.

On the 25^th September 1854, Thomas, an old and highly respectable tradesman of the town was allocated a Raymond’s Almshouse.

The 1861 census records Thomas (67) and Mary (67) living at 11, Raymond’s Almshouses, Newbury

Thomas and Mary were again recorded living in Raymond’s Almshouses in 1871.

Thomas died aged 83, on the 4^th July 1875, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8^th July.

Mary died aged 86, on the 26^th December 1877, in the Newbury Workhouse. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 29^th December.
