Alice Jane was born in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 7th December 1873, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the daughter of William John and Charlotte Arnold.

Her father William John was born in Newbury, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 8th April 1838, at St Nicolas, Newbury, the son of William and Sarah Arnold (nee Ward) who were married on the 29th August 1830, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Her mother Charlotte was baptised on the 29th January 1826, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of William (a Leather Dresser) and Mary Clements (nee Gale) who were married on the 3rd September 1820, at St Nicolas, Newbury. Charlotte Clements married John Stone in 1845. (Marriage registered in the December quarter in Newbury) They had the following children: Mary Ann, 1846, Maria, 1848, Amelia, 1850, Sarah Elizabeth, 1852 and Thomas, 1854. Charlotte was widowed in 1854.

William John Arnold and Charlotte Stone (nee Clements) were married on the 5th June 1865, at Holy Trinity, Chelsea, Middlesex.

The 1871 census records Charlotte Arnold (43), William JohnArnold (33), an Auctioneer’s Broker, and Thomas Stone (16), a Brushmaker’s Apprentice, living in Bartholomew Sreet, Newbury.  Alice Jane (5) was recorded living with her grandmother, Sarah Stratton (64), (formerly Arnold, nee Ward) a Charwoman, at 24 West Mills, Newbury.

Alice Jane died aged 15, on the 21st January 1881. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26th January.

In 1881 Charlotte Arnold (55), wife of an Auctioneer’s Porter and her daughter, Sarah E. Stone (29), a Machinist Seamstress, were living in Bartholomew Street, Newbury. Charlotte’s husband William Arnold (42), an Auctioneer’s Porter, was recorded living at 5 Trafalgar Place, Newbury, with his widowed mother Sarah Stratton (71) and her granddaughter, Fanny Stratton (8).

The 1891 census records Charlotte (65) and William (53), a Bill Poster, living in Vine Yard, Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

Charlotte was widowed in January 1900. William John died aged 61, he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 17th January.

In 1901 Charlotte (75) was living alone, on her own means, at 4, Bartholomew Place, Newbury

Charlotte died aged 78, in the Newbury Workhouse, on the 10th August 1903. She was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 15th August.
