Henry Arnold

Henry, his parents, siblings and early life:

Henry was baptised on the 5^th March 1837, in Thatcham, Berkshire, the son of Henry and Maria Arnold (nee Blake) who were married on the 18^th April 1830, in Thatcham.

Henry’s father Henry was an Agricultural/Farm Labourer. Henry was born on the 8^th November 1804, in Thatcham, Berkshire. He was baptised on the 16^th December 1804, the son of George and Maria Arnold (nee Rhodes) who were married on the 8^th September 1801, in Thatcham. Henry died aged 69, in 1873, he was buried on 29^th January, at St Mary, Thatcham.

According to census records Henry’s mother Maria Blake was born c1806-c1811, in Thatcham, Berkshire. Maria died aged 72 in 1881, she was buried on the 17^th February, at St Mary, Thatcham.

Henry and Maria also had the following children baptised in Thatcham:

Frederick Blake, 26^th December 1830 (illegitimate son of Maria, known as Frederick Arnold)

The 1851 census records Henry (47), Maria (45) and their children, Frederick (21), Mary A. (19), Richard (16), Henry (14), Maria (12), (recorded as Anarea) Eliza (12), (recorded as Elizabeth) Sarah (5), Lucy (3) and Emily (8 months), living in Broad Street, Thatcham.

Henry in later life:

Henry married Jane Hunt on the 26^th October 1861, in Thatcham.

(Jane Hunt was baptised on the 16^th December 1832, in Thatcham, the daughter of Isaac and Maria Hunt (nee Cook) who were married on the 6^th March 1831, in Thatcham).

The 1871 census records Henry (34), an Agricultural Labourer, Jane (38) and their children, Ann (9), Maria (7), and John (5), living at 49 Chapel Street, Thatcham.

In 1881 Henry (45) was working as a Railway Navvy, living in Chapel Street, Thatcham, with Jane (48) and their children, Ann (19) a Rag Sorter (Paper Mill), John (15) a Farm Carter, Sarah (9) and Emily (6).

By 1891 Henry (55), Jane (59), their daughters, Sarah (18), a Laundress and Emily (16), a Laundress and their granddaughter, Elizabeth Nailor (5), were living at 4, The Nurseries, Old Newtown Road, Newbury.

Henry died aged 56, on the 22^nd March 1892. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 26^th March.

The 1901 census records Jane (69), living in Old Newtown Road, Newbury. Her married daughter Sarah Piper (28), her son-in-law John Piper (32), a Domestic Coachman, and her grandchildren, Emily Piper (7), Frank Piper (5), Jane Naylor (19), a Laundress and Elizabeth Naylor (15), a General Domestic Servant, were living with her.

Jane died aged 74, on the 31^st May 1907, she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery, with Henry on the 4^th June.
