Mary Ann Geater

1803-1872

Mary Ann(e) was born on the 5^th March 1803, in Newbury, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 27^th March 1803, at St Nicolas Church, Newbury, Berkshire, the daughter of Thomas and Mary Samuells (nee Nathan) who were married on the 12^th May 1794, in Romsey, Hampshire. (Thomas was a Sergeant in the Berkshire Militia)

Mary Ann’s mother Mary Nathan was born c1773 (place unknown). She died aged 63, in 1836 and was buried on the 1^st April, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

Mary Ann’s father Thomas was born c1766. He died aged 83, in 1849 and was buried on the 29^th October, at St Nicolas, Newbury.

The 1815 census of Newbury records Mary Ann Samuels (11) living in Kimber’s Yard, Northcroft Lane, Newbury, with her mother Mary (39) and her brothers, John (20) and Charles (4). Her father Thomas was away serving in the Berkshire Militia.

Mary Ann married Mr. Allen (no record found yet). They had at least one child, Mary, born c1832 (place unknown, not Berkshire).

In 1841 Mary Allen (35) and her daughter Mary (9) were living with Mary’s father Thomas Samuels (70), in Raymond’s Almshouses, Bartholomew Street, Newbury.

(Lawrence was baptised on the 14^th September 1788, in Kintbury, Berkshire, the son of John and Mary Geater (nee Langfield) who were married on the 10^th October 1787, in Kintbury. Lawrence married Mary Blackman on the 29^th July 1811, in East Woodhay, Hampshire. (Both were from Newbury). They had 9 children, John, c1812, Elizabeth, c1814, William, c1816, Ann, c1818, twins, George and Thomas, 1820, Charles, 1822, David, c1826 and Joseph, c1830. Lawrence was widowed in 1841)

Lawrence and Mary Ann had a son Richard, born c1843, in Newbury.

The 1851 census records Lawrence Gaiter (64) as a Bricklayer, living in Old Newtown Road, Newbury, with Mary Ann (48), and their son Richard (8).

In 1861 Lawrence Gater (75) was recorded as a Hay Cutter, living in Old Road, Newbury, with Mary Ann (58) and Richard (18), a General Labourer.

By 1871 Lawrence Geater (84), a Hay Trusser and Mary Ann (68) were living in King John’s Almshouses, Newbury.

Lawrence was widowed in 1872. Mary Ann died aged 69. Her funeral service was held at St John the Evangelist Newbury and she was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21^st May

Lawrence died aged 88, in 1873. His funeral service was also held at St John the Evangelist Newbury and he was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 8^th March.
