Joseph Ballard

c1837-1872

Joseph was born in Chieveley, Berkshire, the son of Thomas and Hannah Ballard (nee Tidbury) who were married on the 25^th December 1816 at St Andrew, Bradfield, Berkshire.

His father Thomas was baptised on the 2^nd August 1795, Leckhampstead/Chieveley, Berkshire, the son of William and Charlotte Ballard (nee Brooker) who were married on the 7^th November 1782, in Leckhampstead/Chieveley.

His mother Hannah was born on the 15^th August 1792, in Thatcham, Berkshire. She was baptised on the 26^th August, 1792, in Thatcham, the daughter of Jacob and Hannah Tidbury (nee Jayes) who were married on the 25^th November 1791, in Thatcham. Hannah died aged 69, she was buried on the 21^st June 1863, at St Bartholomew, Oare

The 1841 census records David (10), living in Curridge, Chieveley, Berkshire, with his father Thomas (45), his mother Hannah (45), his brothers, James (20), Henry (15), both Agricultural Labourers, George (10), Joseph (3), William (3) and his sister Charlotte (15).

The 1851 census records Joseph (15) working as an Agricultural Labourer, lodging in Little Hungerford, Hampstead Norris/Norreys, Berkshire.

No census records found for Joseph in 1861. Army pension records record him serving as a Private in the 76 Foot Regiment, In receipt of a pension from 21^st June 1870.

Joseph died in the Newbury Workhouse on the 18^th November 1872. He was laid to rest in the Newtown Road Cemetery on the 21^st November (age at death recorded as 34)
